Sarah, Plain and Tall
Sarah travels from her home in Maine to a Midwestern farm in response to a widowed farmer's advertisement for a wife. She misses her home but decides to remain with the farmer and his children because, in time, her affection for them outweighs her longing for home.
Ramona Quimby, Age 8
Ramona is the new kid in school who must deal with a pesky rival. Later on they become friends, but not before Ramona has many adventures while adjusting to life in the third grade.
Flat Stanley
Stanley wakes up one morning flat as a pancake. He adjusts with good humor to life in this shape and has a series of adventures before becoming three-dimensional again.

Amber and Justin have been best friends since they started school together. When Justin and his family must move away because of his father's new job, Justin deals with his fears by hiding his feelings. Amber is hurt and the two friends stop speaking, but they are reconciled before Justin moves away.

Because of Winn-Dixie
Ten-year-old, motherless Opal goes into a supermarket to buy groceries and comes out with a mangy but otherwise irresistible dog. The friendly dog enables Opal to make new friends among the eccentric but lovable residents in the new town to which she and her father have moved.
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
Claudia and her brother run away from home, then choose the Metropolitan Museum of Art as their hiding place. The story tells how they live, undiscovered, in the museum, sleeping in beds of royalty, bathing at night in a fountain, and visiting galleries. When they see what may be a Michelangelo sculpture, they must contact Mrs. Frankweiler to try to document it.
In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson
Ten-year-old Bandit Wong emigrates to America and, via assimilation, becomes Shirley Temple Wong. After winning the friendship of Mabel, a class bully, Shirley learns to play stickball, becomes a Dodger fan, and meets Jackie Robinson.
Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth
After moving to a new town with her family, 10-year-old Elizabeth meets Jennifer, who claims to be a witch. Jennifer persuades Elizabeth to be her apprentice and, as part of her training, Elizabeth must eat raw eggs and onions. The girls become close as they try to find a formula for a magical flying ointment. Eventually, they give up being witches and become simply friends.
Little House in the Big Woods
Little House in the Big Woods, the first of the Little House books, tells a story of pioneer life in a Wisconsin farmhouse in the 1800s. The characters face challenges, such as a panther attack, a severe snowstorm, and a downhill sled ride with a pig. They also share peaceful evenings around the fireplace in the family’s log cabin.
A Jar of Dreams
A Jar of Dreams is the story of Rinko, a Japanese-American girl growing up in California during the 1930s, when Japanese-Americans were often threatened and ridiculed. It tells of Aunt Waka, visiting from Japan, who teaches Rinko to be proud of her Japanese heritage and helps other family members overcome difficulties and realize their dreams.
The Egypt Game
The Egypt Game tells about a diverse group of children who have in common their fascination with ancient Egypt. The "Egypt game" that they create is facilitated by a mysterious professor who allows them to play in the backyard of his antiques shop.
Granny Torrelli Makes Soup
Granny Torrelli Makes Soup is the story of how, as she makes soup with her grandmother, 12-year-old Rosie resolves a conflict with Bailey, her lifelong neighbor and best friend, who is blind.
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with children, must move to her summer lodgings without delay or face disaster. However, her son Timothy has pneumonia and cannot be moved. Because she meets the rats of NIMH, incredibly intelligent animals, she averts catastrophe.
My Brother Sam Is Dead
Eleven-year-old Tim grows up during the Revolutionary War. His father is loyal to the British while his brother Sam has joined the Patriots. Tim, who is sensitive to this family conflict, must nonetheless grow up quickly, help with the family, and fill Sam's shoes.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
In this fantasy, four children step through a wardrobe door into a frozen land ruled by the evil White Witch. When almost all hope is lost, the Great Lion, Aslan, a force of good, returns to the land and changes things for the better.
Blue Willow
Ten-year-old Janey and her parents move from place to place while her father, a migrant worker, tries to find work. Along the way, Janey meets Lupe Romero, who becomes a true friend. After many adventures, Janey, with the help of her beloved blue willow plate, finds a real home.
The Bully
Darrell, a high school freshman, must move to California with his mother when she is fired from her Philadelphia job. At his new high school, Darrell encounters a bully. In desperation Darrell reads an inspiring book and joins the wrestling team, which make him stronger and more confident.
Maniac Magee
Maniac Magee is the story of an energetic boy who can outrun dogs, hit a home run off the best pitcher in town, and untie an impenetrable knot. It's also the story of how this boy confronts racism in his small town, tries to find a home, and attempts to calm rival factions in the town’s toughest neighborhood.
Dragonwings
Moon Shadow leaves China and his mother to live with his father, Windrider, in San Francisco. The boy and his father experience the difficulties faced by Chinese immigrants in California in the early 1900s. Despite hardships and with Moon Shadow's help, Windrider fulfills his dream of creating a flying machine.
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Island of the Blue Dolphins is based on the true story of Karana, the Indian girl who lived alone for years on a Pacific island. She waited, year after year, for a ship to rescue her. While she waited, she survived by building a place to live, making weapons, and finding food.
The Giver
In a world with no poverty, no crime, and no illness, and where everyone has a job and every family is happy, 12-year-old Jonas is chosen for the community's highest office--Receiver of Memories. During his training with the Elders and an old man known as the Giver, he discovers the shocking details of his seemingly utopian world and struggles against this hypocrisy.
Stargirl
Stargirl, an unconventional, home-schooled teenager becomes a phenomenon at a quiet, conservative Arizona high school. Leo, a fellow student, falls in love with her. She is recruited by admiring students as a cheerleader. But her popularity does not last and, ultimately, she is rejected by the conformist students for being too different. Leo begs her to become like the other girls, but then she wouldn't be Stargirl.
The Outsiders
Ponyboy and his two brothers belong to a gang, the greasers, who are working class boys who are often in trouble with the police. Their rival gang is the Socs, well-to-do "social" boys. The greasers imagine that the Socs have perfect lives because they have money and seem to be able to do whatever they want. After a fight goes too far, Ponyboy realizes that the Socs have problems and that both gangs are "outsiders."
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Rumors surround a candy factory, and, for the first time in 10 years, Willy Wonka, owner, is offering a tour to five children--winners of a contest who find Golden Tickets in Wonka chocolate bars. Impoverished Charlie Bucket is a winner. On the tour, Charlie discovers that the rumors can't compare to the extraordinary truth. Charlie's life is changed forever.
The Call of the Wild
Buck, a powerful, domesticated dog, is stolen for use as a sled dog during an Arctic gold rush in the late 1800s. Buck learns to adapt to the brutal climate and the inconsistent ways of humans on the frontier. When his kind master is killed, Buck relinquishes his last ties to civilization and joins a wolf pack, answering the "call of the wild."
Hatchet
Thirteen-year-old Brian is being flown over the Canadian wilderness to visit his father when the plane crashes. Brian survives the crash and spends 54 days alone in the wilderness with the help only of his hatchet and his determination. The story describes how Brian lives through his ordeal.
Holes
Stanley has been sent to a boys' detention center for a crime he did not commit. Stanley's unjust sentence is the continuation of a curse that began with his great-great-grandfather. The boys at the center are forced to dig large holes to "improve their character." In time, Stanley figures out that the boys are really digging the holes because the warden is looking for something.
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Nine-year-old Cassie Logan grows up in a large and supportive African American family while confronting segregation and bigotry. Cassie and her family fight to stay together and strong in the face of brutal racist attacks, illness, poverty, and betrayal in the Deep South of the 1930s.
Bud, Not Buddy
Bud, a 10-year-old African-American orphan in 1930s Michigan, is tired of the brutal treatment he endures at foster homes and runs away to find his father. He arrives in Grand Rapids, where a jazz musician, whom he hopes (on scant evidence) may be his father, owns a club. The musician, Calloway, is not happy with his presence, but the members of his band treat him like family.
Number the Stars
Annemarie Johannesen, a ten-year-old Danish girl, and her family help to smuggle Annemarie's best friend, Ellen Rosen, and her family out of German-occupied Denmark on the eve of a planned deportation of Jews to death camps during World War II.
Night
In this memoir by Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, a studious, deeply religious boy is overwhelmed with remorse at having survived the unimaginable evil and cruelty of the Holocaust that consumed his family. His memories of the concentration camps cause him to wonder how the God he once so fervently believed in could have permitted these terrible events to occur? This heartbreaking book has no ready answers.
